Vietnam has 2 more world cultural heritages
( December 29, 2009)

Quan Ho Bac Ninh folk songs have become one of the 76 elements inscribed on the representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity, and Ca Tru (ceremonial singing) has been listed as an intangible heritage in need of urgent safeguarding by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

“Many of the villages in the northern provinces of Bac Ninh and Bac Giang are twinned, reinforcing their relationship through social customs such as Quan họ Bac Ninh folk songs. The songs are performed as alternating verses between two women from one village who sing in harmony, and two men from another village who respond with similar melodies, but with different lyrics,” the UNESCO said in a statement on September 30.

The 76 inscriptions were decided by the 24 member states of the UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Heritage, holding its 4th session in the United Arab Emirates from September 28 to October 2 in the presence of nearly 400 delegates from all over the world.

The committee inscribed Vietnam’s Ca Tru on the List of Intangible Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding on October 1.

Vietnam’s Nha Nhac Cung Dinh Hue (Hue Royal Court Music) and the Space of Gong Culture in the Central Highlands region were previously recognised by the committee as the masterpiece of oral and intangible heritage of humanity.
